Parenting Lifelong Commitment
Parents: What are the three traits you most desire in spouses for your children? Why?
After seeing many people’s marriages go by the wayside because one spouse lacked character or compassion or spontanaiety or…, I asked myself, what do I most want to see in someone asking to make a lifelong commitment with my children? I want to know what you think would best complement your child’s needs/gifts/strengths/weakenesses. What does Mom or Dad want in a suitor?
That’s a good question — they would have to respect their mother-in-law, of course! But other than that, for my daughter I would want a man that treats his mother and sisters well, but isn’t necessarily a “Mama’s Boy” in the strictest sense of the word. For my boys, I would want a woman that has a close relationship with her father. Mine wasn’t around, and I’ve made all sorts of mistakes with men because of it. I’d like for them all to marry people with a strong faith in God, and people with high self-esteem. Someone with a good sense of values and empathy for others. Also, I would like for them to marry financially secure people — not rich, really, just financially responsible.
